Flora vs Forest: Which Focus App Fits You?

Full disclosure: I make Nurrow, a focus app in this same category, so I have a horse in this race. This page compares Flora and Forest on their own merits first, and I'll tell you plainly who shouldn't use my app.
This comparison is based on official sites, store listings, and user reviews as of August 2026, with sources linked throughout. I have not personally used Flora or Forest; every claim about them below is attributed.
The short version
Both apps grow a virtual tree while you focus and kill it if you bail. Pick Flora if you study with friends: its group sessions, where one person's slip kills everyone's tree, are its signature and its reviews say the social stakes work. Pick Forest if you want the more mature solo tool with app blocking, cross-device sync, and a real-tree program with over 2 million trees planted. And if a tree has never once made you want to come back tomorrow, there's a third option at the bottom of this page.
What both apps share
Flora and Forest are the two best-known names in tree-growing focus timers, and the core loop is the same: start a session, a tree grows, leave early and it dies. Loss aversion is the engine. Both offer real-tree planting programs (Forest through Trees for the Future, with over 2 million real trees planted per its official site, as of August 2026; Flora through Trees.org). Both run on iOS and Android.
Where Flora and Forest differ
- Price model. Flora's core is free, with paid opt-ins only for donating real trees ($1.99/year Flora Care per 2026 reviews). Forest is also free now, per its official site as of August 2026, with a Forest Plus subscription for extras like custom allowlists and advanced statistics. Worth knowing: many review articles still call Forest a $3.99 one-time purchase; that describes the old model, and Forest's own site now says otherwise. The old Forest Pro one-time purchase is no longer offered to new users.
- App blocking. Forest's free tier includes Deep Focus app blocking per its site; Flora also blocks distracting apps during sessions per its listing.
- Platforms. Forest adds Chrome and Firefox extensions with account sync across devices. Flora is mobile-first.
The multiplayer stakes
This is Flora's real differentiator. In Flora's group sessions, if anyone in the group touches their phone, everyone's tree dies. User reviews (2026) consistently report that killing a friend's tree stings more than killing your own, and the friends-garden view turns focus into a low-key weekly competition. Forest's Plant Together mode works similarly (the whole group's tree dies if anyone gives up, per its site), but the ongoing social garden loop is Flora's home turf.

To be fair to Flora: a no-third-party-sharing row is genuinely good, and better than much of this category.
If you want a companion instead of a tree
Here's where I stop being neutral, so I'll say it directly: I built Nurrow because trees never worked for my brain. A tree is a consequence. It grows or it dies, and either way it doesn't know you. Nurrow's answer is a companion: finish focus sessions, earn eggs, and hatch a collection of 100 pixel-art pets with names, rarity tiers, levels, moods, and a friendship bond that grows the more you show up.
Who shouldn't use Nurrow: if group accountability is what keeps you honest, Flora does that and Nurrow doesn't. Many 2025 and even 2026 reviews still describe Forest as a $3.99 one-time purchase with no free iOS version, which no longer matches what the official site says.
Which is better for studying with friends?
Flora, by most accounts. Its group sessions raise the stakes so that if anyone in the group touches their phone, everyone's tree dies, and reviewers report the social guilt is a stronger motivator than losing their own tree. Forest has group focus too (Plant Together), but the friend-garden loop is Flora's signature.
